City in Motion: “The Family”

City in Motion: “The Family”

The people who comprise City in Motion Dance Theater are all vastly different. What brings us together is our determination and love of movement. We are teachers, designers, accountants, clowns, grandparents, mimes, and artists who together help to form a beautiful and unconventional family in the heart of Midtown Kansas City, Missouri. City in Motion was founded in 1985 to bring modern dance as an artform to the KC metropolitan. The nonprofit is a professional company of dancers, a performance series, a school, and a youth dance theater. On average we serve about 5,000 constituents a year with access to high quality contemporary dance programming through our classes, shows, and outreach efforts. We are an all-volunteer lead organization, passionate about dance for everyBODY.

A brochure from the 1990’s says it all…

“Imagine… a school of dance centrally located in Kansas City that is built on the philosophy that
everyone is a dancer. Imagine a professional faculty offering a wide assortment of dance, movement, and exercise techniques, providing classes for all levels of dancers, novice through
professional.”

“Imagine a City filled with creative artists – dancers, musicians, visual artists and writers. A city
alive with professional artists looking for a focal point for the expression of their talents. Imagine
a group of dedicated Kansas City artists willing to provide that protective “umbrella” by creating
a regional center for modern dance.”

“School age children have already experienced the joy of moving with City in Motion Dance
Theater’s specially designed performances under the auspices of Young Audiences, all across
the metropolitan areas. With the opening of the School of City in Motion Dance Theater, now
everyone can share in the discovery of their own potential in movement.”
