City in Motion: “The Form”

City in Motion: “The Form”

The first iteration of City in Motion’s season premiered during The Children’s Place (TCP) Gratitude Bruncheon on August 31, 2022. TCP is a local nonprofit that works to heal children and families who have experienced trauma. Supportive Community Partnerships is a core value of our organization, so when asked to create an original work for TCP, CIM rose to the occasion, with support of the Sauceda Family Funds. Bobbi Foudree conceptualized the journey of a child in the TCP program, and materialized it into choreography. The piece, “Hurt, Healing, Hope” was performed to an audience of over 500 in downtown Kansas City Missouri, and garnered a standing ovation from the audience. The work integrated new and returning professional company dancers to – from hurt, to healing, to hope. This performance laid the foundation of the “Family in Form” project, told through dance.

“The City In Motion team did an amazing performance for our Gratitude Bruncheon. They told our story of family, resilience, and support from our community through their choreography to really share our vision of “Childhood Restored.” It is magical to see how City In Motion can immerse an audience to tell our story of hope and healing for children in our community.”

Sara Boatwright-Bland, Corporate Partnerships Manager, boatwrights@childrensplacekc.org

The piece was later performed to a larger returning audience (family) at the 23rd Dance in the Park (DITP) on September 11 2022. DITP is produced by City in Motion and 5 neighborhood associations. It is free and our largest dance outreach event for over 1400 Kansas Citians. At this performance, founders were present, while the 2022-2023 company performed the piece, reiterating family regeneration and returning to one’s roots. Additionally, City in Motion provided a professional stage for several other new and emerging dance groups to perform including Mavka Ukrainian Dance Group, Pythons Drill Team, Golden Onyx Performance Troup, Grupo Folklorico Izcalli, and many more.
